Buying principleA sprint is useful when a bounded decision needs observable evidence. It is wasteful when the real problem is still unknown or the team has no authority to act on what it learns.
A design sprint agency should define the decision before the agenda
The brief should name one decision, who owns it and what evidence could change that person’s mind. “Improve onboarding” is a theme. “Should new finance managers connect a bank account before or after seeing a sample cash forecast?” is a decision.
That wording changes the work. The team can map the critical moment, sketch competing sequences, prototype the chosen alternatives and watch likely users attempt the task. It does not need to redesign the entire product.
Google’s Design Sprint methodology describes six phases: Understand, Define, Sketch, Decide, Prototype and Validate. Google also says teams can shorten the format and choose methods for the specific goal. A supplier selling five calendar days before hearing the decision has started with its timetable, not your risk.
Use a sprint only when the uncertainty is narrow enough
A sprint fits a bounded product uncertainty that can become visible in a prototype. It does not replace market discovery, longitudinal research, technical investigation or a business model decision.
Consider a founder debating whether buyers need a comparison step before checkout. A sprint can prototype both paths and observe comprehension. It cannot prove demand exists, estimate a market accurately or guarantee that either path will convert after launch.
The Design Council’s Double Diamond separates understanding and defining a problem from developing and delivering solutions. If the team still disagrees about the user or problem, commission a product discovery workshop first. Compression does not turn an undefined problem into a useful test.
| Unresolved question | Best starting point | Expected evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Which problem deserves attention? | Product discovery | Problem framing and priorities |
| How do people behave today? | UX research | Observed needs and behavior |
| Which bounded direction should we choose? | Design sprint | Prototype test and decision record |
| How should a known interaction work? | Product prototyping | Testable interaction model |
Preparation determines whether the week produces evidence
Useful sprint work begins before the first workshop. The agency should confirm the decision owner, assemble existing evidence, map hard constraints, recruit participants and prepare the research plan.
For the finance product, preparation might surface a compliance rule that forbids showing a real forecast before identity checks. Discovering that on prototype day wastes the week. A technical lead and compliance owner should expose the constraint while alternatives are still cheap.
The GOV.UK Service Manual recommends setting actionable research objectives, identifying the beliefs to test and deciding what the team needs to know for its next decision. Its research planning guidance also says recruitment should begin at least a week before a session. Ask who recruits, which criteria define a relevant participant and what happens if recruitment fails.
- Decision statement and named decider
- Existing research, analytics and customer evidence
- Technical, legal, operational and brand constraints
- Participant profile, recruitment status and consent process
- Research questions and a neutral discussion guide
Prototype fidelity should match the risk you need to see
A polished Figma flow is not automatically better evidence. Choose the cheapest prototype that can reproduce the behavior under question without distracting participants.
A paper sequence may be enough to compare information order. A code prototype is more credible when the risk involves responsive behavior, input constraints, latency or a complex state change. An AI workflow may need controlled sample outputs so every participant encounters the same failure.
GOV.UK’s prototyping guidance says prototypes can range from sketches to code and that code is useful for realistic web interactions. It also warns that prototype code may not meet production security or performance standards. Treat the asset as evidence unless the proposal explicitly scopes production engineering. A product prototyping agency is the better purchase when the interaction itself, rather than a cross-functional decision, is the main deliverable.
User sessions reveal patterns, not statistical certainty
Small moderated sessions can expose where participants hesitate, misunderstand language or fail a task. They do not provide a statistically representative forecast of market behavior.
Suppose four of six finance managers try to skip account connection. That pattern gives the team a reason to inspect the explanation, risk cues and sequence. It does not prove a population-wide percentage or justify a guaranteed revenue claim.
GOV.UK defines moderated usability testing as watching participants complete specific tasks and recommends agreeing the questions, users and prototype focus first. Its service research guidance says rounds using methods such as usability testing will usually involve four to eight participants, while surveys and benchmarking need hundreds for clear quantitative findings.
Ask the agency to separate observations, interpretations and recommendations. If broader behavior matters, plan a follow-up with a UX research agency or a production experiment.
The handoff should make the next decision cheaper
The final package needs more than a prototype link. It should preserve why the team chose a direction, what participants actually did, which constraints remain and who owns the next action.
For the finance example, the decision record might say: keep the sample forecast first, add a clear data boundary, test identity copy with compliance, then measure connection starts in beta. That is actionable. “Users liked concept B” is not.
Require the prototype, storyboard or flow map, research plan, session notes, evidence clips where consent permits, findings grid, open risks and a dated recommendation. The owner could be a product manager for another test, an engineering lead for a spike or a product design agency for delivery.
Use this checklist before hiring a design sprint agency
A credible proposal explains what must be true before the sprint, what evidence it can produce and what it cannot prove. Check these points before approving the engagement.
- One bounded decision and one named decider are explicit.
- The agency explains why a sprint fits better than discovery, research or prototyping alone.
- Existing evidence and hard constraints will be reviewed before workshops begin.
- Participant criteria, recruitment, consent and fallback plans are owned.
- Prototype fidelity is tied to the risk, with production status stated clearly.
- Findings distinguish observation from interpretation and recommendation.
- The final package includes a decision record, open risks and a named next owner.
Bring Seuil the decision your team cannot settle in a meeting
Send Seuil the blocked decision, the evidence already available and the constraints that cannot move. That is enough to determine whether a sprint is appropriate, what should happen before it and which prototype and participant plan could make the decision observable.
